How to Season Cast Iron Grill Grates

  • Light your charcoal and spread them evenly.
  • Place the grates carefully on the cooker.
  • Use a natural bristle brush to coat the grates with cooking oil.
  • Wipe off any excess oil using a towel and leave a tiny coating.
  • Allow the grates to heat for about 30 minutes.
  • After the 30 minutes, repeat the coating process and wipe off the excess oil on the grates.
  • Repeat this process for about 3-4 times.
  • Your cast iron grates will be properly seasoned if they appear in shiny black color.

A good habit to keep your cast iron grill grates in good shape is to season them after every barbeque. To achieve this:

  • Leave the charcoal burning after the cook in a charcoal grill or let the gas fire burn for a while in a propane grill. This will carbonize any residue on the grates
  • Scrub the grates with a brush while hot, and then wipe them with a damp cloth to remove any leftover chunks.
