PUR Water Filter Troubleshooting and How to Guide

PUR water filters are effective for removing water contaminants and are among the best in the market. With reliable faucet filtration systems, as well as pitchers and dispensers, they help ensure your water is free from harmful contaminants.

If you are having issues with your PUR water filter, you should be able to clear most problems by simply performing some troubleshooting steps. Here are simple instructions for troubleshooting some of the common problems with these filters, and an easy how to guide so that you make the most of your PUR unit.

How to Install and Uninstall the PUR Faucet Attachment

Your PUR system box includes one PUR device, one filter cartridge, and several adapters and washers (for external threaded and internal threaded faucets). You may not need an adapter, but otherwise, you will need to choose the one that is right for your faucet.

How to install the adapter

  1. Remove your original aerator and its washer. Use a rubber jar opener if the aerator is difficult to remove.
  2. Choose your new adapter to match the threading on your faucet. Make sure the black rubber washer is inserted into the threaded end of the adapter.
  3. For external threaded faucets, try using adapter A. If A doesn’t fit, try adapter B. Similarly, for internal threaded faucets, try using adapter C or D depending on the one that fits.
  4. Then, finger-tighten your new adapter and washer to your faucet.

When installing PUR faucet attachment, make sure the device is level to the faucet in order for the threaded mounting nut to attach to the faucet threading. Turn counterclockwise to tighten.

To install the filter

  1. Start by twisting the top cover off.
  2. Then insert the filter into the device.
  3. After you have inserted the filter, replace the top cover.
  4. Then install the PUR device with 1-click.

After you have installed a new filter cartridge, run cold water for 5 minutes to flush it.

How to uninstall the PUR faucet attachment

  • Remove the device from the faucet by turning the threaded mounting nut clockwise.
  • Remove the cover.
  • Slowly turn or twist the filter cartridges. This will help loosen the filter if it is stuck.

Should I Soak the Filter Before Use?

Before first use, run cold water for 5 minutes in a filtered position to activate the filter. During filter flush, seeing cloudy water and hearing the sound of water pushing air out of the filter cartridge is normal. Flushing removes any loose materials, which is normal.

How Do I Clean My Faucet Filtration System

Use a damp sponge or soft cloth to clean the exterior of the faucet mounting housing. You can also use a mild dishwashing liquid. Using anything else to clean your faucet mount could damage the unit.

Why Is My PUR Water Filter Light Not Working?

This could be as a result of the light indicator being in sleep mode. Try pressing and holding the reset button for 5 seconds, then release. This will automatically reset the light.

If your filter light is still not working, the reset button could be stuck.  Try the following steps to reset the filter light on your faucet mount.

For vertical faucet mounts:

  1. Remove the filter and replace back into the unit.
  2. Make sure the reset button is not stuck in. Try manually resetting button inside canister with a finger.
  3. The unit will continue to function as long as you continue to change your filter after every 100 gallons of use or every 3 months.

For horizontal faucet mounts:

  1. Remove filter and place back into the unit.
  2. Remove filter and place aside. Using a dry cloth, wipe the threading on cap and unit thoroughly. Then reinstall the filter.
  3. The unit will continue to function as long as you continue to change your filter after every 100 gallons of use or every 3 months.

For models PFM400H, PFM400HBB, PFM400HC, PFM450S, PFM800HX, PFM100B, PFM 200B, PFM 150W, PFM300W, PFM350V

  1. Remove the filter and place back into the unit.
  2. Push reset button in for 3 seconds until all 3 lights flash, then release the button.
  3. Make sure reset button is not stuck in. If reset button is stuck in, try pulling up on the button so that it springs back into place.

How Does the PUR Water Filter Light Work?

The filter change light indicates filter status. As you start to use the filter, the green light will flash 6 times.  Replacement of filter cartridge resets the light. The light changes color depending on how long the filter has been in use or how much water has been filtered. Green shows the filter is working, yellow shows that you will need to change the filter soon, while red color signifies end of filter life. The filter will reach the end of life at 100+ gallons or 90+ days.

The filter change light contains a non-replaceable battery. The battery will stop working eventually but the filter is still functional.

How to Reset the PUR Water Filter

To reset the light button after replacing the PUR water filter, simply press the reset button for 5 seconds. The light will then flash green to indicate it’s been reset and its working optimally.

Where is the Reset Button on a PUR Water Filter?

The reset button is found inside the front of the chamber where the filter sits. When the filter cartridge is out, look inside along the barrel and you will see a slender tab towards the base but mounted on the wall. If it is stuck, you can manually reset filter lights by reaching in with your finger and push the tab back in until it clicks.

When Should I Change My PUR Filter?

For best performance, replace your PUR filter after 100 gallons of use or every 3 months. If your filter light flashes red, it is time for a new filter.

How to Change a Filter on the PUR

To change the filter, remove the device from your faucet by unscrewing the threaded mounting nut and the follow these steps:

  1. Twist back cover off
  2. Remove the old filter and insert the replacement into the device.
  3. Replace the back cover.

After each new filter is installed, run cold water for 5 minutes to flush it.

Why is My PUR Water Filter Blinking Red after Filter Change?

This could mean that your water filter still has debris which are giving the filter a false alarm. So clean the water filter housing thoroughly by hand and rinse well.

Can You Run Hot Water Through a PUR Water Filter?

Never run hot water through the filter. Do not use water with temperatures above 100oF/38oC as this may alter the filter. Only use cold water.

Why is My Water Filter So Slow?

If your PUR water filter has a slow trickle, it could be because the water flow has been restricted by the two curved wedges inside the filter. So to clear the problem, try removing the filter and shake it vigorously until you hear the granules shifting inside. You can also buy a plastic washer and place it between the curved wedges.

If you have a slow draining dispenser, it could be a result of clogging particles or trapped water bubbles. To clear the problem, firstly submerge the filter into a large water-filled jar and see if it floats. If it does, take out the filter and bang it against the sink. Do this carefully not too hard. If it is trapped particles, you should clean and replace filters.

How to Change the Battery on a PUR Electronic Water Filter

PUR electronic water filter system has an indicator light that lets you know when to replace its batteries. Wait until you see a flashing red light on your filter to replace the battery. The battery chamber is located directly on the top of the filter, which is attached underneath the sink. Follow these steps if you want to change the battery on your PUR electronic filter:

  1. Pull the battery holder compartment out from the top of the PUR filter head.
  2. Remove the two AA batteries and replace them with new ones. Make sure you align the batteries properly so that the negative and positive charges align.
  3. Then slide the battery chamber back into its place until you hear a click. The indicator lights will flash red and green for 10 seconds when the battery chamber is back in place.
